Irony in Africa
A Danish 'artist' (Kristian von Hornsleth) has gone to Africa and bribed Ugandan poor people with pigs and sheep and the like, to take his surname. He says it's a comment on the hypocrisy of aid to African countries or something. Fair enough. It's not the daftest idea I have heard of described as art.
Of course 'authorities' are up in arms about it.
Uganda's ethics and integrity minister, James Buturo, said: "It's illegal and insulting. "He claims one animal can get them out of poverty, which is a lie. Then they have to take his name? But these methods are evil and satanic."
The best line in this story, however, is reserved for villager George Sabadu Hornsleth.
"Africans adopting European names for gifts - that's nothing new.... Why do you think I'm called George?"
