Computers Annoy Me

I have a love-hate relationship with computers. One that seems to become more -hate than ever before. Last night I was trying to help Heipel put some picutres on his website for his blog. I don't know how to do it for people using blogger as their host, but on a site like mine and his it's relatively simple. You create a folder on your site, put the image in there, then point the blogger thing to that image in that folder.

For us the hard part has been in FTP of all things. One of the first and simplest things a computer can do on the internet or any network. I mean it's practically primordial when it comes to these kinds of things.

Here's where the -hate part comes in. Recently there's a trend in creating computer operatings systems that 'just work'. And in that phrase is all the frustration imaginable. You see it used to be that you had to have lots of programs to do these various things, and you had control panels and widgets etc to futz with things. But now in in OS X (and XP from what I know), they've built all these things into the system so that it 'just works'. Ahhh so instead of an interface to futz, you just have it built in. With FTP that means no program or widget, rather you connect to an ftp server like you connect to a network server, or you use your browser. Either one will log you into the FTP site. Problem is, when you do, you don't have permission to do anything but download. Which is pretty much half of what FTP was invented for.

And there is of course NOTHING in any documentation that would suggest why this is the case or how to get around it, because of course, it 'just works'. UGH. bastards. I hate computers.
